Braddock Elementary Mandarin Bee

Braddock Elementary Mandarin Bee

Registration is now closed.

Good luck to all the contestants!

For contest details and rules, please click here!

FAQS (Frequently asked questions)

Q: Can parents come watch our kids compete during the contest?

A: Yes! Please come support your child for his/her academic competition!

Q: Where is the contest held on Braddock campus?

A: Inside the auditorium.

Q: Who will be the judges for this contest?

A: We will have 3 parent judges: Andrea Goldman, Ching-Yi Wang and Limo Dai, who are either native Mandarin speakers from China and Taiwan or fluent in Mandarin Chinese!

Q: How many students from each grade will compete for the first 5 places?

A: We don’t know yet. Depending on the registration, the Mandarin Support Committee will decide and inform each contestant if they will need to enter a virtual, preliminary contest on zoom  on Saturday May 20th, 2023 prior to the May 24th, 2023 competition day!

Q: If my child entered the final round of the contest, but I can’t make it to watch and support her on the day of the event at Braddock auditorium, is there another way I can watch the contest afterwards?

A: We’ll try to streamline the whole contest on our All Grades Braddock MI Facebook page LIVE.?? (is it possible?) Stay tuned…

Q: What is the time limit for the contestants of each grade for “Mandarin Bee?”

A: There is no specific time limit for each grade level contest. Based on the virtual Mandarin Bee contest back in May 2020, some contestants failed after 3 or 4 sets of words, some kept going for the whole set of 500 words in their grade level. But we’ll try our best to limit each grade level contest to be completed within 50 minutes. (please also use the proposed schedule time table above as a reference).

Q: Will my child have a chance to review/practice all the words before the contest?

A: YES! And we highly encourage your child to do so in order to FINISH STRONG at the end of the school year! The links of lists of words for each grade level will be posted or sent via email to all contestants by May 17th, 2023 (a week before the competition)!

Q: What if there is a tie between 2 contestants?

A: When the final 2 contestants can both recognize and say the set of words out loud with correct pronunciation and tones back and forth for 5 times in a row, they’ll be provided with a textbook article they’ve been using in class (e.g. Meizhou Chinese) to read out loud for the judges to decide who the champion is.

The contestant who can read the same assigned article in all accurate tones and with better intonation and emotional expression will win the championship.

Q: When is the award ceremony?

A:The award ceremony will be held at the end of each grade level contest.

Q: What’s the red envelope cash scholarship for the top 3 winners?

A: For the top 3 winners of each grade level, he/she will receive a red envelope with cash in it.

     –1st place: $50,

     –2nd place $30,

     –3rd place $20.

Q: Why would the contestant be charged $10 for entry fee?

A: This event is to support the Braddock MI program. All proceeds go to Braddock account under Dragon Sprouts, and it will be used for Braddock’s 2023 Moon Festival celebration in fall!

Q: Will the 4th and 5th place winners receive cash scholarship red envelopes too?

A: Unfortunately no. But they’ll receive medals plus a prize in their choosing, for example: a set of Chinese comic books, a Chinese calligraphy set, cute stationary… etc.

Q: Will my child receive any prize if he/she didn’t enter the final contest (for example, if we have many contestants, and we will have a preliminary virtual contest first)?

A: Unfortunately no. Each contestant will receive a paper certificate for participation if he/she didn’t enter the final round or win the 1st to 10th place. But please continue to encourage your child to keep working on their character recognition by well preparing for their weekly dictation quizzes!

Q: If my child pairs with his/her friend, and they won the first few places, will they each get a trophy or medal?

A: Yes! Your child and his/her teammate will EACH get a certificate, a trophy or a medal if they won the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or the 5th place! HOWEVER, they’ll have to split the cash scholarship in the red envelope. If they won the 6th to the 10th place, they’ll also EACH get a certificate and a mystery goodie bag as a reward.

Current Climate for Asian Americans

Historical and present day experience of Asian Americans

For our May Dragon Chat, we feel it’s important to recognize and celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. We are thrilled to have Dr. David Chih and Dr. Teresa Mok lead us in a discussion about Asian American history, the challenges this group has faced, and the current wave of racism during the pandemic. Like all of our Dragon Chats, all family members are encouraged to join. Please join us if you want to learn more about Asian American history, talk within the community about the current atmosphere for Asian Americans, or ask questions about how to talk with our children about the racism they hear about in the news. We encourage everyone in our community to please join us in a very relevant conversation during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

We highly encourage all Mandarin Immersion Program families to participate. However, for this inclusive celebration, we warmly welcome all families at Mandarin Immersion schools to participate. Asian American heritage is not a requirement for participation, and we welcome our Asian American allies to join us.

Parents and Teachers – Create a special album!

Please share with us a moment in your everyday Asian American life. These photos could be a family or holiday photo, or a glimpse of your regular weekend activity. Please email your photos to dragonsprouts2021apahm@gmail.com  and we’ll post these photos on a special celebration page on this website.

Students – Join our contest!

We are excited to host a contest for the students at our MI schools!

Group 1 Students: Elementary (K – grade 5)

Draw an 8” X 11” picture of your Asian American Inspiration. This could be a person who is an Asian American role model, or an activity that makes you proud to be Asian American or an Asian American ally. Group 1 Parents can submit student entries in this form.

Group 2 Students: Middle School/High School (grades 6 – 10)

Submit Essay

Write a 500-word essay describing someone (family member, athlete, actor, etc.) or something (Asian art, dance, music, language, custom, celebration, etc.) that makes you proud to be Asian American or an Asian American ally. Group 2 Parents can submit student entries in this form.

Both groups must submit their entries by 5 pm on Friday, May 21. If you don’t have a Google account (which is required to upload documents in the forms), then please email your entry to us at dragonsprouts2021apahm@gmail.com.

Annual Chinese Cultural Celebration - Hosted by DragonSprouts

Our Chinese
Cultural Performance is virtual in 2021

Join us for performances from all the students in the Mandarin Immersion program.

DragonSprouts’ Chinese Cultural Celebration brings students and families across all LAUSD Mandarin Immersion Program schools together to welcome the new year and celebrate new beginnings.

This annual fundraiser is our biggest event of the year and represents over half of our annual budget, covering the cost of all Mandarin-specific materials, training and events not provided through the school district.

Due to COVID-19, we can’t hold the event in our traditional format in a theater setting. However, we are thrilled to bring you an exciting online performance - the first of its kind! - to showcase the talents of our Mandarin Immersion students across all our campuses. With our new format, it’s easy to invite the extended family and help us support your children and our community!

  • Saturday, March 20, 2021

  • 3 pm

  • Zoom link

    • Meeting ID: 889 5068 7786

Don’t forget to purchase your DragonGrams to send to your children, friends, and teachers across all MI schools! You can send a friendly message during our program and help support DragonSprouts at the same time. IMPORTANT: When sending DragonGrams to students, please reach out to their parents to ensure they approve displaying their children’s names on Zoom during the program.

A quick program note - if you log on after we reach capacity of attendees, you will be prompted to click on a “Watch Live Stream” button. You will leave the Zoom meeting and another web page will open for you to watch a live stream of our program.

During our program we will have Kahoot games! The slight time delay in the live stream prevents optimal participation any Kahoot activities. Therefore, we highly recommend you log on early to ensure you get a “seat” in the Zoom webinar!

What are our MI options for Middle and High School?

One family’s exploration into continuing their Mandarin Immersion education

When we first enrolled our children at Broadway and Braddock Elementary Schools, thinking about middle school was the last thing on our minds. But the time flies quickly and once again, parents in the Mandarin Immersion community will be faced with the challenge of selecting the middle school that’s right for them. Join us as we learn from the experience of one MI family that explored options available in our community and how the parents eventually selected the right school for their children. Crystal Chu Kaza will lead our discussion and share her children’s path from Broadway Elementary to their current high school.
